Goforth's Transition

Watch Greg's Announcement

A Letter from Greg

"Hey ChangePoint Family.

I am reaching out to you today to let you know about a ministry transition that our family will be making after the end of May. In February, we received an email from the staff search team at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone, NC. Today, I accepted the invitation to become the Worship Pastor there.

Here is some backstory for context...
Julie and I met as music majors at Appalachian State in Boone back in the early 1990s (yep we are old), and Mt Vernon was where we worshipped together and really began doing ministry together. Mt Vernon recently celebrated 155 years as a church family and has a long, rich history of being a gospel-saturated, missional, Jesus-focused, Bible-centered church family. Mt Vernon loved college students. And for Julie and me, it made such a difference in our spiritual formation. I was a music intern there, and God called me to ministry there on a snowy Sunday night in February 1991. A significant part of why we feel drawn by God toward this is the opportunity to invest in college students and in the next generation. We want college students to know God. And then, to follow Him and obey Him as they pursue the plans He has for them.

I want all of you to know that I have not been searching for another place of ministry, as Julie and I have believed God brought us to Alaska almost 9 years ago and to ChangePoint 7+ years ago, and that His intent has been to continue to have us be a part of the work of ministry here at CP. Receiving that email in February opened our heart to the possibility of a transition in ministry for us.

Subsequent to that initial email inquiry, we have prayed and asked the Lord’s will to be done in this - whether to stay or to go - through a lengthy process of many conversations regarding ministry vision and philosophy, as well as meeting staff and leadership there. In mid-March, when it was really becoming apparent that God was at work in this, I made Scott Merriner aware. Scott, Rick, and Eric have all three been so encouraging, appropriately challenging and supportive through this journey. We have also appreciated so much the prayers and encouragement of our CP elders. We have worked closely together to come up with what we believe is a healthy, and hopefully staff and church family-honoring and God-glorifying plan for communicating this. We all believe this is so important. These 7+ years of ministry with all of you have been a privilege. What a good God we get to worship and serve together.  What a privilege to get to serve the Church and glorify Jesus with you!

Love you all.

Greg"
