Rural Ministry in Marshall, AK

The Marshall Story

A few months ago, Samaritan’s Purse approached us asking us if we’d take ownership of three church buildings they’d built in the village of Marshall about 10 years ago.  The church itself had changed hands a number of times over the last decade and has been empty since 2018.  Instead of seeing the buildings slip into disrepair, or end up being used for purposes which wouldn’t honor the Lord, Samaritan’s Purse stepped back in and called ChangePoint.

A key factor in Samaritan’s Purse’s decision to partner with ChangePoint is that we have a Native Alaskan pastor in Lance Kramer.  Lance will be the spiritual authority for the Marshall church family, but he lives in Kotzebue, hundreds of miles north of Marshall.  We needed someone who lives in Marshall, so we met with a few of our Alaska ministry partners to search for a solution.  In His sovereign providence, through these connections the Lord provided us John and Margaret Lewis.  John and Margaret have spent the better part of the last 10 years in part-time ministry in Marshall and have developed deep personal relationships with many Marshall families.  They will be moving to Marshall full-time at the end of July.  We will be leveraging Lance’s online (and occasional in-person) teaching while entrusting John and Margaret with day-to-day relational ministry.  With the Spirit’s guidance we will breathe life back into the Marshall church.

Samaritan’s Purse has offered to turn over ownership of the property in a pristine state, so the purpose of these work crews is to restore everything about the property to like-new condition.  Whatever maintenance, replacement, upkeep is required will be done over three weeks in May, and Samaritan’s Purse is providing everything…all our crews have to show up with is a readiness to work.  We are excited to see how God is going to use this church to reach people all across the lower Yukon.
