Elders' Statement on Anchorage Proposition 1

Dear ChangePoint Family,

This week all registered voters in Anchorage will receive a municipal ballot in the mail. One of the propositions on this year’s mail-in ballot seeks to amend the 2015 decision by the Anchorage Assembly to allow people to use the bathroom of their gender choice rather than their gender of birth.

The elder team has been asked to join other Christian leaders and sign a public document supporting this proposition. We have decided not to enter the public debate on this issue because we feel a strong sense of conviction to keep our message to the world laser-focused on one simple, heartfelt plea: “Be reconciled to the God who created you and loves you!” That is the one message people who do not yet know Jesus most need to hear.

But we feel just as strongly compelled to ensure that as a church family we are fully equipped to think biblically about the challenging issues of our time. God has called his church to be the “pillar of truth” to the world.

Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.”

2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”

We recognize that every one of us falls short of God's desired plan for our lives, and it is the mission of the church to extend the grace and mercy of God to the world.

We live in an age of moral and sexual confusion that needs biblical clarity. The growing cultural message that our gender identity can be fluid and is something that we can choose autonomously is directly opposed to God’s revealed truth in Scripture.

Genesis 1:27 “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

Last fall, in our message series called Marvelous Design, we studied these passages of Scripture and others and reaffirmed that God has a design for human flourishing that requires men and women to embrace their created gender roles. The Scriptures teach that God created men and women differently, both biologically and emotionally, and that they are to complement one other with their equal, but unique, design.

As followers of Jesus, we have sincere compassion for everyone who struggles with gender identity issues. We are all born sexually broken because of sin and need the redemptive work of Christ to make us whole. Let us be clear: we do not hate or discriminate against any person or group. God loves all people, and every human being bears the image of God.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We are raising this theological issue again with our church now because it is relevant to a pressing community issue, and we desire to cultivate sound biblical thinking about the issues of our day within our church family. We urge you to seriously consider this issue and to act in the public square and in the voting booth in alignment with God’s Word.

As your elder team we affirm the Biblical principles that are driving Proposition 1. This is based purely on biblical and moral convictions. There is zero partisan politics in our motivations or sentiments. There will be some people who disagree with our stance and statement. We firmly believe that we can disagree on an issue and still love one another. We harbor no ill will towards those who have a different worldview.

As you prepare to vote, here is a good question to ask about every public policy proposal: “Which approach will move our culture and community closer in line with God’s marvelous design for human flourishing?”

Finally, please join us in begging God to richly bless the leaders and people of Anchorage.

With humility and sincerity,

The Elders of ChangePoint
