DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Matthew puts the interaction of 8:18-22 between two sets of miracle stories. Since we know that Matthew's gospel is topical rather than chronological this actual event may have happened at a time unconnected to the miracles before and after it. Why do you think Matthew records this story here?

2. What point do you think Jesus is making when he says by the way he answers the scribe in 8:19-20? What point is he making when he answers the disciple in 8:21-22?

3. What are the obstacles that keep you from fully following Jesus? How might your spiritual partners help you remove or reduce those obstacles?
